Match Report: Liverpool 1-0 Sunderland & much more!







Liverpool v. Sunderland

An eighty-second minute goal by Spaniard Fernando Torres gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Sunderland on the opening day of the 08/09 Barclays Premier league. Newcomer El- Hadji  Diouf had a solid performance with a couple of chances. Torres's goal was a 25 yard shot that skidded past Keeper Craig Gordon. Overall, Liverpool deserved the win, but Sunderland sure did give the Reds a match.

Bolton Wanderers v. Stoke City

Goals from Gretar Steinsson, Kevin Davies, and Johan Elmander gave Bolton the 3-1 victory over newcomers Stoke. In stoppage time, substitute Ricardo Fuller scored for Stoke.

Middlesbrough v. Tottenham

Goals by David Wheater and Mido secured the victory for Boro over Tottenham. Robert Huth scored an own-goal for Boro.

Everton v. Blackburn Rovers

Two very nice goals, one from Mikel Arteta of Everton, and one from David Dunn of Blackburn had the score tied 1-1 before Yakubu's header had Everton in the lead. Two minutes later, Roque Santa Cruz leveled the game 2-2. Hero Andre Ooijer scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to steal all three points.

West Ham v. Wigan

Two goals in the third and ninth minute from West Ham striker Dean Ashton secured the victory for West Ham 2-1 over Wigan. Amir Zaki pulled one back for Wigan, but it was not enough for the Latics.

Hull City v. Fulham

The first Premier League game in Hull's history turned out as a victory 2-1 over Fuham after goals from Caleb Folan and Geovanni. Seol Ki- Hyeon scored for Fulham.

Arsenal v. West Bromwich Albion

Samir Nasri got the only goal for Arsenal, but it was enough to get the Gunners the 10 win over West Brom in the first game of the Premier League season.
