Hughes Tells Schwarzer He Won't Go to Gunners

New Fulham manager Mark Hughes has told keeper Mark Schwarzer that he will not be Arsenal's keeper any time soon. Schwarzer pleaded Hughes to be let go after Fulham declined an offer in May. Arsenal is looking to replace Manuel Almunia, and apparently Arsene Wenger is keen on making Schwarzer the keeper at the Emirates. Schwarzer, 37, had this to say about the possible move, "It's an amazing oppurtunity that I want to take."

Beattie Leaves Stoke

Striker James Beattie has left Stoke on a transfer to Rangers where he has signed a 2 year contract with an optional 3rd year for an undisclosed fee. Beattie scored 10 goals in 38 league appearances for the Potters. Manager Tony Pulis had this to say about the move, "This is a fantastic opportunity for James to play at the highest level and I am sure he will be relishing the chance of Champions League football."

Premier League Official Ball Unveiled

The new ball for the 2010-2011 Barclay's Premier League season has been unveiled. The new Nike Total 90 Tracer ball will be the ball used in the 380 total games played this year. The new ball was designed especially for better accuracy and touch. The Nike design team spent 18 months testing the new ball to make sure that it could keep up with the play with one of the world's most elite leagues. Stoke keeper Mark Sorensen believes that this ball is the best the Premier League has used. "We've been used to the Nike ball in the Premier League for 10 years now and it has progressed. I think it is a better ball now than when it started. A lot of research has gone into it," said Sorensen. Thanks Premier League

Players To Watch This Season

As the 2010-2011 Barclay's Premier League season approaches, I'll give you several players to watch that are worth keeping an eye on this season.

1- Javier "El Chicharito" Hernandez (Manchester United-Forward)

The 23 year old is the first Mexican player to

ever play for Manchester United. He made his deb

ut at the MLS All-Star game when he came on for Nani, and he later scored. In his most recent appearance against Chelsea in the Comunity Shield, Hernandez came on as a substitute and scored in a 3-1 victory for United. Look to see Hernandez come on a substitute for either Wayne Rooney or Dimitar Berbatov, and even make occasional starts for the Red Devil

s. Who knows, he could even earn a pla

2- Steven Pienaar (Everton-Midfielder)

The South African had a great World Cup, and he's even been li

nked to Aston Villa to replace James Milner if he goes to Manchester City. Wherever Pienaar ends up, expect him to have a great season. Piennar brings a unique style to his game. He can score goals, make the perfect pass, dribble through a defense, or win the ball on the defensive side. Last year for Everton, he scored 4 goals and had 4 assists. Expect him to have an even better year this year, possibly doubling his tally in goals.

3- Milan Jovanovic (Liverpool-Forward)

The new Liverpool striker came to Merseyside from Standard Liege on a free transfer. Jovanovic was a scoring machine for the Belgian side, netting 69 goals in 155 appearances. With Fernando Torres recovering from a rough World Cup, Jovanovic could be the one to step up and carry Liverpool throughout the season.

4- Chris Brunt (West Brom- Midfielder)

The 25 year scored 9 goals in the '08/'09 season for the Baggies when they were in the Premier League. Brunt had another solid year for West Brom last year when the played in the Championship. If Brunt has a big year, West Brom could be the cinderella story of the season (I still expect them to be relegated). Brunt and Roman Bednar are West Brom's real goal scoring threats this year, so Brunt could have double digits in goals.

Bob Bradley Early Favorite For Aston Villa Job

Since Martin O'Neill resigned as Aston Villa manager, there are many favorites for the job. United States national team manager Bob Bradley is one of those favorites, he might even be the frontrunner to get the job. According to Oddshecker, Bradley has a 5/1 chance of becoming the manager of Aston Villa. Before Mark Hughes took over at Fulham, there were rumors that Bradley might get the job at Craven Cottage. Other frontrunners for the Villa job are Sven Goran Eriksson (6/1 odds), Martin Jol (6/1 odds), Slaven Bilic (6/1 odds), and Alan Curbishley (9/2 odds). BREAKING NEWS: O'Neill Quits as Aston Villa Manager

Martin O'Neill has resigned as Aston Villa manager just days before the season started. O'Neill took over for Aston Villa about 4 years ago, and Villa has had a successful run with him at the helm. O'Neill lead Villa to 11th place in his first season as manager, and the past three seasons, Villa have placed sixth, good enough for Europe. O'Neill said this about his time at Aston Villa, "I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely. It's obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent cub. I would like to pay tribute to the Villa players, my coaching staff and the Villa supporters for all the support and encouragement they have given both the club and me personally during my time as manager." Aston Villa stated that reserve team manager Kevin MacDonald has taken the role of caretaker manager. Newcastle Set to Sign French Winger Ben Arfa

Newcastle Unite are on the verge of signing French winger Hatem Ben Arfa on a season-long loan deal that would cost the Magpies about 1 million pounds. Manager Chris Hughton was targeting Ben Arfa for most of the summer, hoping that he would bring some creativity and flair to Newcastle's midfield. With Lyon, where Ben Arfa started his career, he scored 11 goals in 87 appearances for the club. Ben Arfa now plays for Marseille, where he has scored 15 times in 91 appearances for the club.

Hodgson Wants Crouch

New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is targeting a deal that would bring Peter Crouch to Liverpool. The 6' 7'' striker already spent a three year spell with Liverpool, where he scored 41 in a total of 134 appearances. Hodgson is looking at a price near 8 million pounds for the big man, but Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is reportedly holding out for more than 9 million pounds, which is the price he paid for Crouch about a year ago when he came to White Hart Lane from Portsmouth.

Preview to the 2010-2011 Barclay's Premier League Season

We're now only a week away from the start of another great season of football. The summer transfer window has been a busy one for many teams, and we'll be able to see many new faces this year. Who knows, one of these new faces could be the next great star in the Premier League. Some of these notable players are David Silva who joined Manchester City on a 24 million pound transfer from Valencia. Manchester City were very busy, as usual, since there present owner Sheik Mansour took over. City also bought Yaya Toure from Barcelona for an undisclosed fee. Arsenal made a name for themselves in the transfer window as well, signing striker Marouane Chamakh from Bordeaux. Chamakh scored 56 goals in 230 appearances fo the Bordeaux, so expect him to start along side Robin van Persie. Chelsea signed former West Ham and Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun, while Liverpool picked up Joe Cole. One of the most "hyped" new players in the Premier League is Javier Hernandez, better knows as El Chicharito to people in Mexico, where Hernandez is from. The applause Hernandez got when Manchester United played the MLS All-Stars in Houston, was easilly equal and quite possibly louder than Ryan Giggs, a Manchester United legend. Hernandez came on as a substitute, and scored in his debut in a 5-2 win for United.

The new season is wide open. There are a few teams that have a chance to win the title this year, and couple teams that could be the surprise of the year. Manchester City is one of the favorites this year, but in my mind, I don't think they'll finish in the top four. They need to realize that it takes a while for a team to "gel" together and to get them to play at their highest potential. Next year will be City's year, but this year, there are only three teams that have a chance to win the title. Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea. For Arsenal to have a chance of the title, Chamakh and van Persie need to have a chemistry up front that no other duo in the league has. With midfielders like Fabregas, Arshavin, Samir Nasri, and young Alex Song, the two up top will definitely have the service they need, their job will be to put the ball in the back of the net. The key for Chelsea is to take advantage of their easy start to the season. Chelsea's first five games are against West Brom, Wigan, Stoke, West Ham, and Blackpool. Three of the five games are at home, and if Chelsea don't take fifteen out of a possible fifteen points through their first five games, it will surely be a disappointment. Manchester United need a big year from striker Dimitar Berbatov. Berbatov scored 12 goals last year for United, which is still not a bad year, but Berbatov has never really established himself at United like he did when he was at Tottenham. This could be the year. My prediction is that Manchester United will be champions this year, while Chelsea finishes second, and Arsenal finish third. Tottenham round out the top four, while Mancester City finishes fifth and Aston Villa is sixth. Everton finishes seventh, while crosstown rival Liverpool finishes eighth. The teams that go down will be Blackpool, West Brom, and Wigan.

Hodgson Gets New Contract

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has ben rewarded with a new 1 year contract to stay with the Cottagers. Hodgson took led Fulham to their best finish in the Premier League last year, when Fulham finished in 7th place. This year, Fulham is 9th in the table with a record of 7 wins, 6 draws, and 6 losses. Fulham have been very good this year at home, with 6 of their 7 wins at Craven Cottage. The big weakness for Fuhlam has been matches from Craven Cottage, where they have suffered with only 1 win and 4 of their 6 losses. Philadelphia Union

I apologize for the long lack of posts on my blog recently, but I will be frequently updating with new stories. The Philadelphia Union are the upcoming team in Major League Soccer. Around the Philadelphia area, there is much "hype" about the new club. A while ago, I attended a double-header at Lincoln Financial Field, with the two matches being Canada v. Honduras, and USA v. Panama, and all I saw was Philadelphia Union apparel. Hopefully another great club to add to the storied tradition of Philadelphia sports. The "Linc" will definitely be crowded for the Union home-opener on April 10th at 3pm, when they host DC United.

Robben: Barcelona Wanted Me

Accodring to FourFourTwo reports, Arjen Robben claims that Barcelona wanted to sign him while Robben was at Real Madrid. Other clubs including Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Fenerbache were all interested at the time. Robben had this to say, " That's all history now. Im very that I'm a Bayern Munich player now. I'm looking forward to a successful season in Germany." In league play, Robben made 50 appearances for Madrid, and scored 11 goals.

Carroll Leaving Newcastle?

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has been linked to moves with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bolton in the past couple of days. Apparently, Carroll wants to play in the Premiership as soon as possible. If Carroll leaves, then this could really hurt Newcastle because Shola Ameobi, Newcastle's star striker broke his foot the other week in a league cup game. In my opinion, this move would hurt Carroll's career. I don't think that he is good enough to play in the Premiership yet. I realize that he scored a couple of goals for Newcastle last season when they were battling relegation, but the only reason that he played was that Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen wanted to leave the club.

Modric Out With Broken Leg

Luka Modric has broken his leg. This happened during Tottenham's game against Birmingham this past Saturday. X-rays show that Modric has fractured his fibula. Tottenham have not released a statement about how long Modric will be sidelined, but they assume it will probably be a couple of months without there star midfielder.

EPL Review

To start off, I would like to apologize for the recent lack of posts as I was on vacation in the south of France. Speaking of the French, Arsene Wenger was sent off today in the clash between Manchester United and the Gunners. Wenger was upset that Robin van Persie's stoppage time goal was dis-allowed. In my opinion, he made an absolute fool of himself by standing there watching the remainder of the game. Anyway, the results this season have shown that this season could be very unpredicting. Chelsea and Tottenham are tied atop the table, Chelsea leading by goal difference.

Didier Drogba... Is this His Season?

Didier Drogba has scored three goals in four games for the blues this season, who look very strong. A big question at Stamford Bridge this year is if Chelsea have the depth to win the title. Drogba and Anelka look strong at the front, combining for four goals in four games. The midfield is always strong with Lampard, Malouda, Ballack, Deco, Mikel, and others. But the big question this year is the defense. It has proved to be solid so far this year, only aloowig two goals in four games, but can they hold together?

Surprise Contender in Top 10

The surprise team who will finish in the top 10 this year is Sunderland. Even though thay lost 1-0 to Stoke today, they still look like a strong team. I'm not saying that Sunderland is going to make Europe, but they won't be struggling to survive in this league. With a strike force of Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones, and a midfield which includes Lee Cattermole, Steed Malbranque, and Kieran Richardson, Sunderland could be in business.

Surprise Relegation Contender

Fulham has a good chance of going down this year. Although they finished mid- table last year, I don't think they have a strong enough midfield. I like Fulham's team, but I just don;t think it will be a good year for them.

Xabi Alonso Continues Madrid's Spending

Xabi Alonso is the newest player to arrive during Real Madrid's summer of spending an astonishing 220 million pounds. Madrid gave the Reds 27 million pounds, and will give a maximum of another 3 million pounds depending on the success of Alonso in his first two years at the club. Alonso signed a 4 year deal with the spanish giants, who have already bought Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, probably two of the top three players in the world the other being Lionel Messi, who plays for Barcelona. Liverpool manager Rafa Benitex plans to replace Alonso with Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani. Rafa would also like to buy Wigan's Lee Cattermole. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had this to say about Liverpool's upcoming season, "Liverpool have just had their best season for years, finished up with 86 points and still finished four adrift. It will be hard for them to match that,let alone improve. Other teams will read the better." During Alonso's five year spell at Liverpool, he scored 19 goals.

Lita Signs For Boro

Former Reading striker Leroy Lita has signed a 3-year deal with Middlesbrough. Lita has joined Boro on a free transfer. Lita chose boro ahead of Sheffield United and Leicester. Lita, who is 24 rejected a contract extension to stay with Reading. Sice becoming a professional player with Bristol City in the 2002-2003 season, Lita has scored 79 goals. In the two seasons that Reading was in the Premier League, Lita scored 16 goals in 56 games.

Chelsea will aim to sign Andrea Pirlo this week, and then target Frenchman Franck Ribery and Argentinian strker, Sergio Aguero. A Win For the Ages

Yesterday, the red, white, and blue of America stepped onto Free State Stadium in South Africa about to play one of the biggest games of their lives. And boy, did they come to play. Bob Bradley's lineup had a very attacking and aggressive look to it. Up front, the USA had the best of both worlds with Charlie Davies and Jozy Altidore. Davies, a quick and skillful striker had a fantastic games yesterday, especially in the first 15 or 20 minutes. Jozy Altidore showed why he should be starting every game for the national team. In the 25th minute, Altidore, with back to goal muscled off Spain defender Joan Capdevila and buried one off kepper Iker Casillas' hand, and into the net. The USA led 1-0 at halftime. In the second half, Spain were definitely the dominate team. Tim Howard was spectacular, making save after save. Commentators John Harkes and JP Dellacamera couldn't remember such a time when a keeper was under so much pressure. Howard, was fantastic nut the defense was just out of this world. Oguchi Onyewu must have literally blocked 7 or 8 shots. Jay Demerit and John Spector also had fantastic defensive games. The whole team was going all out, throwing themselves in front of shots to block them, and clearing the ball well. The hard work payed off in the 74th minute, when Benny Feilhaber made a fantastic run and played a ball to Landon Donovan on the wing. Donovan crossed the ball in and it went to the far post after a deflection. The ball came right to Sergio Ramos's feet. Not knowing Dempsey was behind him, Ramos hesitated, and Dempsey took adavantage. GOAL!!!!! 2-0 USA and they looked like they were going to the finals. When the final whistle blew, the lads were going crazy, jumping on eachother, and showing so much joy. They really deserved to win. They were the better team. They were the first non- European team to beat Spain since Argentina did it in 1999. They also broke Spain's 459 minute shutout streak, and there 15 game-winning streak. This was only the second time in history that the USA beat a Fifa #1 ranked team. Congrats to the lads and good luck in the finals.

Ex New Jersey Boy Comes Back to Kill USA

After a 10 men USA team took a 1-0 lead right before half time, they looked like they could finally get their first ever win against the Italian national team. But then, Giuseppe Rossi took the field. After being on the field for about 5 minutes, Rossi stole the ball from Benny Feilhaber and beat Tim Howard with a screamer to put things on level terms. After a Daniele De Rossi goal put Italy up 2-1, Rossi put the game out of reach with a stoppage time goal to give the Italians a 3-1 win. Good effort lads.

First, I would like to apologize for the lack of posts lately, as I have been very busy. Well, as I watch the U.S. beating Honduras in the 75th minute, I'm not very impressed. Honduras completely dominated the first half hour, despite a couple of good U.S. chances. But after the half, U.S. looked like a different team. They've still lacked the quality finishes they need (except for Donovan's penalty). We better step it up, because Costa Rica is hot(they beat T&T 3-2 today). Good luck lads.

I Have A Good Feeling...

Firstly, I would like to wish everybody in the United States a happy Memorial Day. It is our soldiers who keep our world safe. But back to the strange title of this article, after watching the tears that were shed after Newcastle's loss by the many Newcastle fans at Villa Park and by the players who I'm sorry to say didn't really look like they put up a fight yesterday, I actually have an alright feeling that we went down this year. I guess we sort of deserve it seeing that Jonas Gutierrez didn't start, and youngster David Edgar did on the last day of the season .One positive note is that Damien Duff has vowed to stay at Newcastle next season. Another thing that kept me from feeling too upset yesterday was that after the game, when of the commentators said "And Newcastle will be playing against the likes of Blackpool, Peterbrough, and and Plymouth Argyle." Thanks to all the lads for at least getting a shot off in yesterday's game =:). See you in the championship next year!!! And of course, it was all fun and games for Mike Ashley watching his team be relegated.

Yesterday's game between Newcastle and Boro was basically going to decide who was going to stay in the Premiership and who was being relegated. When Habib Beye scored an own goal in the third minute, it was looking like it was going to go downhill for the Toon. But in the ninth minute, Steven Taylor scored a vital goal for Newcastle off a corner. Newcastle started to press hard, but couldn't manage to find a second goal. In the second half, Middlesbrough looked destined to score when Alan Shearer put Obafemi Martins on the field in the 69th minute. Let's face it, we're always trying to predict which team will beat who, and who will win the title. In most people's opinion, the title winner changes every couple of weeks until the end of the season. Another subject that many people debate about is who is the best team in the Premiership at this moment in time. And after watching Arsenal "manhandle" Middlesbrough this morning, I think it might be the Gunners who are playing the best football right now. After a 2-0 loss to Chelsea yesterday in Alan Shearer's managerial debut, Newcastle stand 18th in the table, with Sunderland (17th place team) 3 points ahead of us. If the lads don't "step it up", then we'll surely be relegated. I just don't understand. We have a quick, pacey striker in Obafemi Martins, and we have a deadly finisher in Michael Owen. We have a decent keeper in Steve Harper, and our back line is lead by Fabricio Coloccini, who I admit is a fantastic player. Despite his rare bad moments, Coloccini has done a good job of keeping our back line straight. Jonas Gutierrez has also done a good job, despite the fact that he was ALL over the field looking clueless in yesterday's game. Alan Shearer insists that Newcastle will stay up, but he only has 7 games left to keep the Toon Army happy. I hate to say this, but I think it's just a little too late for Newcastle. I'm sure Shearer will lead Newcastle to a couple wins under his reign, but we've let too many games slip out of our grasp.

Now I know we're usually about soccer here on Shearer's Boss, but since I went to this game, I had to write about this. Temple was the four-seed and Duquesne was the seven-seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament. At the end of the first half, Temple was winning 42-37, a very high-scoring game. Personally, Dionte Christmas and Sergio Olmos were MVP's of the game. Temple ended up winning the game by a score of 69-64. Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on penalties yesterday to win the Carling Cup. After a scoreless 89 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo almost stole the winner for United after he cut to his left, and smacked a shot off the post in the 90th minute. The game went into extra time. After a scoreless half an hour, the game went into penalties. Ryan Giggs scored for Manchester United on his first penalty. Today was a big day for Newcastle and there battle for survival in the Premiership. After today's well deserved 3-2 win over West Brom, Newcastle climbed to 13th in the table with 27 points from 25 games played. Damien Duff started the scoring in the 2nd minute for the Magpies after a woeful defensive play on West Brom's part. A Great Performance

After a 3-0 win against Portsmouth today, Newcastle stand 14th in the table with 19 points from 17 games played. Newcs really stroked the ball around well, which helped a lot with the second and third goals. Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins, and Danny Guthrie were on the tally sheet today with some nice goals, particularly Guthrie's who beat David James with a top- corner shot that was inside the 18 yard box. Jonas Gutierrez, despite being booked had a fantastic game creating chances every time he had the ball. This was possibly our best performance of the season. Well done to the lads! As I sit here and I watch the match between Everton and Liverpool, I hear the crowd chanting, I see the players fighting for the ball, and I see referees being bombarded when they don't make the right calls, which has made me think, is anything in the Premiership better than the Merseyside Derby? You see players like Gerrard, Torres, Yakubu, Arteta, Cahill, Howard, and Reina, battling it out for the right to be crowned the kings of Merseyside. The play is usually very sloppy, but it is absolutely great football to watch. In the league, Everton and Liverpool have played 177 times, Liverpool winning 66 times, Everton winning 55 times, and 55 times, the two teams have played to a draw. So, Liverpool has had the better of Everton, but the past couple seasons the games have been back and forth. An eighty-second minute goal by Spaniard Fernando Torres gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Sunderland on the opening day of the 08/09 Barclays Premier league. Newcomer El- Hadji Diouf had a solid performance with a couple of chances. Torres's goal was a 25 yard shot that skidded past Keeper Craig Gordon. Overall, Liverpool deserved the win, but Sunderland sure did give the Reds a match.

Bolton Wanderers v. Stoke City

Goals from Gretar Steinsson, Kevin Davies, and Johan Elmander gave Bolton the 3-1 victory over newcomers Stoke. In stoppage time, substitute Ricardo Fuller scored for Stoke.

Middlesbrough v. Tottenham

Goals by David Wheater and Mido secured the victory for Boro over Tottenham. Robert Huth scored an own-goal for Boro.

Everton v. Blackburn Rovers

Two very nice goals, one from Mikel Arteta of Everton, and one from David Dunn of Blackburn had the score tied 1-1 before Yakubu's header had Everton in the lead. Two minutes later, Roque Santa Cruz leveled the game 2-2. Hero Andre Ooijer scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to steal all three points.

West Ham v. Wigan

Two goals in the third and ninth minute from West Ham striker Dean Ashton secured the victory for West Ham 2-1 over Wigan. Amir Zaki pulled one back for Wigan, but it was not enough for the Latics.

Hull City v. Fulham

The first Premier League game in Hull's history turned out as a victory 2-1 over Fuham after goals from Caleb Folan and Geovanni. Seol Ki- Hyeon scored for Fulham.

Arsenal v. West Bromwich Albion

Samir Nasri got the only goal for Arsenal, but it was enough to get the Gunners the 10 win over West Brom in the first game of the Premier League season.

Transfer rumors are saying that West Ham could be looking to make a huge move and bring back former player Joe Cole.
